Evaluation

Ok, not too sure what the topic of the evaluation is but I’m going to go with the whole year rather than just BA8

The year started well and hopeful. Admittedly I’d chosen a project way to big for me to handle with a narrative that took 3 pages to summaries. But the idea was good, actually looking at integrating the player so much as to take them out of the god seat and into the seat of the character they play. Also that the game responded to every choice you made including the small things like shape and colour of objects you chose, let’s face it, humans sweat the big and small stuff, so why shouldn’t games, you can have your huge narrative choices like in ‘Mass Effect’ and ‘Dragon Age’, But It’ll be for nothing if it’s not for the little things. Having an Ai character reflect on your appearance and actions and making decisions base on those facts would improve believability huge deal. Also having them actually speaking the name you’ve chosen would also improve emersion more I believe. Building a website was also a new experience for me, though looking quite bland I think I show myself in a good and clear light, just wish I was able to get the thing up and running. This years work doesn’t seem to have as much heart and soul in it as it did last year, I hope I’m not losing my edge or creativity, then again, losing most of your work to a computer can do that to you. But apart from that disaster this year seemed to go all right. My dissertation was a new experience to; then again my subject matter being ‘Sentient robots’ was defiantly a challenge. Looking at human behaviour played a huge part of my research, seeing as robots are built in our image it’s most probable that they’d aspire to our likeness as well. When it comes down to it, this year was tough, new things were expected of me, which I had no idea how to do to begin with. But I managed all right.

8th Post

Hand-in is tomorrow, my website still isn’t online, but everything else is done. I just hope MC doesn’t mind the slight technicality that my site isn’t on the net, all the hyperlinking and media work, it’s just that i wasn’t able to get it up online. Well seeing as i’m not a systems admin or anything like that it’s not suppressing really.

7th Post

One week left till hand in and I’ve finally got my website finished but still not up but all my art is all finished, all i’ve got to do now is upload the website (if that ever happens) and start working on my show reel. I’ve recently started playing competitive games online and i’ve noticed that the attitude towards fellow gamers is no longer competitive, but just plain rude. The use of language whilst playing games these days is just awful, especially for players at a young age. I remember the days before online gaming, when it was just split screen and Lan parties. You wouldn’t dream of saying half the stuff people call each other online back then. The only reason i can come up with is the “security” of online play, the fact that other players can only hear you and don’t know you at all, but you wouldn’t talk to strangers like that in the street, you’d get your face kicked in. Is this really the way people want to go? saying things just because there’s nothing the people on the other end can do about it so it’s best to just retaliate with equal but if not more vulgarity?

[Flash 10 is required to watch video]

As i mentioned in one of my earlier posts i’ve been watching Fails of the Weak, on Achievementhunter.com. Recently they’ve started another Halo:Reach Machinima called Achievement Horse. Essentially both hosts play a game of horse using maps built by the halo community. Horse is a game where you and a friend set each other challenges, when ever someone wins a challenge the loser takes a letter from the word horse, onces the loser has the whole world ‘horse’ the other player wins. This video is a fail video of my own that i submitted to fails of the weak this week. I was playing horse with a friend until i went through a teleporter and ended up underneath his falling tank.

Ok back to Uni this week, Website is still playing up and i’m at my wits end with it. My artwork is going slowly and my showreel can’t start till my artwork is finished. On another note i’ve recently been getting more and more interested in the Halo franchise, I’ve noticed how much art Halo has generated outside of the games, you’ve got Books, Graphics Novels, Films, Machinma, Animations and more. I don’t know what it is exactly that ties me to Halo, It could be it’s many nods at cult science fiction such as Star Wars, Star Treck and even the Alien series. But what i love about it most is that there’s more than just the game. Which is what i think games lack these days, The game it’s self is fun, but if there’s nothing to continue the story after it, it leaves you wanting more. Were as with Halo there’s always more. You could say that Halo is the Star Wars and Star Treck of the gaming world.

Okay it’s half way through the easter break. Still getting on with artwork, the website is getting a bit irritating, can’t exactly figure out how to get it online, a major flow i know but i hope to have it rectified by the time of submission. Found another cool animation during my internet travels, it’s about an aged Viking who’s only wish is to dye gloriously in battle. The story’s funny and the animation and art style amazing.

3rd Post

March is almost over and I’ve now got a sold Idea on what i’m submitting for both my showreel and website. I’ll admit that blogging isn’t really my thing, But i am starting to like it more and more. I stumbled upon this video late last night It’s called Red and it’s a different take on the “little red riding hood” story, though it’s just a rough animation still, i like effort the artist put into drawing it by hand.

2nd Post

It’s now the first week of march, since my last post i was able to make some more progress with a website layout, still thinking about my showreel though. Recently i’ve been watching this thing call “Fails of the Weak” a weekly video devoted to fails of players whilst playing Halo: Reach. I like the idea cause it gets you thinking of something to submit and how to recored it in Halo:Reach’s own Machinima feature. Here the link below so you can see what i’m on about.
